M S Benbow Participates in YouthForce NOLA STEM Intern Program

Partnership introduces New Orleans students to STEM careers

METAIRIE, LA. — (July 24, 2018)— M S Benbow & Associates(MSB) is proud to partner with YouthForce NOLA Internship Program (YFI), a program which aims to help youth make connections and acquire long-term employment opportunities with local companies in STEM fields. Under the program, MSB has hired a New Orleans high school student for a summer internship at the multi-discipline engineering consultancy.

The program, a collaboration between the City of New Orleans and the YouthForce Collaborative Steering Committee, provides paid internship experiences for students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) industries. The internships are designed to impart on the students skills necessary for success in the workforce as well high school and college. The students complete 60 hours of paid training before beginning their 90-hour placement with their specific company.

MSB’s summer YouthForce NOLA intern will spend one week in each of the firm’s three engineering disciplines—Electrical Power Systems, Instrumentation & Controls, and Telecommunication & Technology—followed by a final week in Human Resources, Administration and Drafting & Design. During the month, the student will gain insight into the day-to-day activities involved in a STEM profession as well as general office experience such as how to send emails, punctuality and taking notes. MSB’s intent for the internship is to deliver an immersive, interactive experience rather than simply observing.

“We feel that participation in this program supports MSB’s mission to give back to the community while fulfilling one of the company’s core values,” said MSB President Leo L. Holzenthal, Jr. “Our internship will provide exposure into how an engineering firm works, including responsibilities and assignments so the intern can see the impact of his efforts, as well as provide a snapshot of how a business is run.”

This will be MSB’s first year participating in the YFI program as the company continues a long history of supporting STEM programs and promoting STEM careers across Louisiana.

Recognized with the 2018 Louisiana Small Business Award for Outstanding Growth, MSB is engaged in a number of workforce development and regional economic development associations. This year MSB engineers mentored a team competing in the 27th-annual First Robotics Competition Bayou Regional and was a sponsor of the 62nd-annual Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair (GNOSEF).

One of the Gulf South’s most respected and versatile multi-discipline engineering corporations, MSB serves the diverse integrated engineering needs of a range of industries, including oil and gas exploration and production, chemical manufacturing, and food processing, manufacturing and derivatives. A leading design and engineering firm serving the industrial, government, institutional and energy sectors, MSB is celebrating 40 years of continued growth as a privately owned professional engineering corporation in 2018.
